Dr. James Douglas completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland in 1990, graduating with honours. He then pursued specialised training in respiratory and sleep medicine at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. Afterward, he completed a two-year fellowship in sleep medicine and respiratory physiology at the Department of Pulmonary Physiology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. Dr. Douglas attained Level II qualifications in Sleep Medicine and his Royal Australasian College of Physicians fellowship in 1999.
Dr. Douglas has been in private practice as a Respiratory and Sleep Physician since 2013. He previously worked in the public health sector, notably as Director of the Prince Charles Sleep Disorders Centre from 2001 to 2014.
Dr. Douglas has served on state and national committees for the advancement of sleep medicine, thoracic medicine, and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
He has co-authored national guidelines in clinical respiratory and sleep medicine.
An active member of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australasian Sleep Association.
Dr. Douglas is passionate about medical education. He served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, sharing his expertise with the next generation of medical professionals. He has also served on the National Examination Panel for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Research is a key interest for Dr. Douglas. He has been the chief investigator on the NHMRC grant project, Treating Insomnia Co-morbid with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Effectiveness Trial. Additionally, he has been an associate investigator on several NHMRC and Australian Research Council grants.
